Fingerprint Cards launches new capacitive biometric sensor for side-mounting on smartphones

Fingerprint Cards has expanded its biometrics portfolio with the development of a slim new capacitive fingerprint sensor designed to be side-mounted on mobile devices.

The new FPC1540 enables convenient and secure fingerprint authentication for access control on innovative smartphone designs such as bezel-less and foldable phones. The sensor can also be used as a power button, volume control, camera shutter button or to control scrolling. Manufacturers can also coat the sensor in a range of colors to match the aesthetics of their product.

“As smartphone design diversifies, biometrics are becoming an enabler for innovation and differentiation,” comments Fingerprint Cards Mobile Business Line SVP Ted Hansson. “It’s not easy to create a sensor this slim while retaining industry-leading biometric performance. We’ve got years of experience, R&D expertise and our advanced algorithms to give OEMs maximum design flexibility, and without compromise to security or functionality.”

The company expects the first smartphone integrated with the new FPC1540 to launch in early 2020.

FPC recently surpassed 400 devices with its fingerprint technology implemented.

Despite the increasing popularity of in-display fingerprint sensors, recent market research suggests that capacitive fingerprint sensors will remain the dominant sensor type over the next five years.
