Huawei to Start Selling 5G Smartphones in August

Chinese telecoms giant Huawei said Friday that its 5G-ready smartphone, the Mate 20 X, will formally go on sale on Aug. 16, marking the second launch this week of a handset supporting fifth-generation wireless technology produced by a Chinese company.

The move comes after another major Chinese smartphone-maker, ZTE, announced Tuesday that it would begin taking pre-orders for its 5G model, the Axon 10 Pro.

The launches come as Chinese companies seem to be accelerating the rollout of affordable 5G-ready products in a bid to attract users and thus boost market share. The Mate will start at 6,199 yuan ($901.46), Huawei said, more than the 4,999-yuan asking price for the Axon. By comparison, market leader Samsung has priced its flagship Galaxy S10 5G handset at more than 10,000 yuan.

In June, Huawei announced that the Mate 20 X had received China’s first license for 5G end-devices.
